Since the program launched in October 2014, the campaign says it has saved nearly 1,400 lives nationwide by helping families create escape plans, installing free smoke alarms and providing education about fire safety. The Red Cross came to her home a few years ago and replaced batteries and installed five additional smoke alarms, including the alarm that rang first in September.Ĭoleman was recommended by a neighbor to be a part of the Sound the Alarm program in which the Red Cross installs smoke alarms in people’s homes at no cost. “It’s because of them, they saved our lives.” “If (not for) the Red Cross installing additional fire alarms, we don’t know if we would’ve made it out that night,” Cherise Coleman said. 24, a ground fault circuit interrupter outlet that Coleman had issues with throughout the years started the fire in her garage that night. ![]() The Colemans escaped unharmed from the fire because of a smoke alarm installed by the Red Cross a few years ago. She immediately pulled everyone out of harm’s way, including her 12-year-old daughter who was in the shower. “‘You better not open that door!’” Coleman said her mom yelled at her. Cherise Coleman, the homeowner and UNLV graduate student, placed the back of her hand out and felt the warmth of the roaring fire happening on the other side of the door. When a childhood friend she runs into asks if he can take her out to eat, for instance, her potential responses range from "No" to telling him she'd rather eat a foot - without any positive options. While Kathy's caustic persona is in line with the edgy, somewhat dark mood and subject matter, her behavior isn't always exemplary - in addition to professing a love for smoking, her comments range from slightly sarcastic to borderline disrespectful. Topics Kathy jots down in a notebook, such as "Incident in '81," help highlight central plot points and can serve as a to-do list of items players need to ask about when they converse with characters. Similarly, Kathy can't access some areas in scenes, and will automatically head for the door, which helps avoid spending time on a futile search. In some instances, though, players will be told they've already spoken with the person about that topic - or a message can appear letting them know Kathy doesn't feel the need to show another character a specific item. As a result, they may need to circle back to places they've already been and hunt again for clues - and they may find themselves repeating a conversation with a character. They may find exploring the graveyard, police station, and other settings fun - although they'll have to be OK digging around a bit, as there's a minimal amount of direct guidance on where to go and what to look for. By reaching certain information milestones in the game, players can advance the story and access new areas. Featuring hand-drawn locations, Kathy Rain: Director's Cut is set in the 1990s, which includes some fun nods to retro items like landline phones and fax machines. This adventure features a witty, sarcastic main character with a handful of adult themes to produce an adventure for older players. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() These branches in the plot affect not only the outcome of the story, but the relationship between Tyler and Alyson. After observing and investigating both sides, the player is left with the hard choice of deciding which memory to lock in as reality. But events recalled by one twin don't always synch with the memories of the other. It's these moments when they, and the player, can dig deeper into events of the past, uncovering clues and hidden details that can change the course of events. There are key times and locations when the twins are able to manifest past memories in a tangible way. The twins' apparent psychic bond is the real twist. Sometimes these can be a bit jarring when they interrupt the flow of the story, but they never get in the way of progressing further. The occasional puzzle pops up to challenge the player's deductive reasoning and problem-solving skills. The gameplay is almost an afterthought, but it's still got some interesting elements. By giving players the power of choice, and the ability to see how certain decisions can completely alter the lives of themselves and others, it not only gives the players an opportunity to reflect on their own views, but also opens the door for further dialogue. They're treated with real respect and shown from multiple points of view without trying to pass any sort of judgment. And yet, even though these are used in a gaming environment, these issues are never trivialized. The story and its mystery are built on some pretty heavy topics such as mental health, cultural and religious beliefs, and gender identity. What begins as the twins' quest to come to terms with their childhood traumas quickly evolves into an even greater message of understanding, perception, and finding the strength to move forward. Tell My Why doesn't just meet the standard for storytelling, it sets a high bar for future games of this type. In gaming, sometimes it's the play that drives the experience, and other times it's the story, but for narrative-driven interactive tales, it's all about the story. ![]() ![]() Collecting every trophy in a village allows access to an extra level that can be completed in order to collect a Jigsaw puzzle piece collecting these pieces is required in order to access the game's fifth and final world consisting of remixed level segments. The story is a bit well-trodden for the genre, but mostly unexplored for video games. The horror is thrilling to experience, and it kept Conarium fresh for me in my first playthrough. The lighting is especially impressive as it is incredibly realistic, which means when reality starts to bend it is even more disconcerting. Art works by seducing the viewer into engaging with it Conarium accomplishes this with a grotesque design, compelling the player to discover more.Īll of this ran very smoothly, with no framerate hitches, buggy environments, or other issues that would have ruined the feeling of slowly skulking through the Antarctic. Each time I explored these beautiful environments, I was continually shocked by a new, nonsensical area. A heavy atmosphere confines the player to dread what they could be dragged into next. The fidelity of the graphics strengthen how unsettling the journey gets. Zoetrope Interactive do a fantastic job of creating a horrific invasion of reality. The nature of forces beyond mere mortal comprehension puts the task of deciphering the insanity to the reader. ![]() Lovecraftian stories are incredibly visceral to the reader. While this is an interesting take on the source material, the incredibly rich environments are tainted by repetitive puzzles and gameplay. The game is more interested in trapping the player into horror and then preventing their escape. Instead, Conarium tries to capture the gentle slip into insanity. Games like Eternal Darkness, Eldritch, and Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth pit the player against the madness. Many games that contain Lovecraftian horror rely on the player combating this perversion of reality. Beings beyond comprehension and worlds made of madness lose their awe when they are perceived through someone else’s view. Lovecraft’s influence on pop culture is found everywhere, but very few things attempt to adapt the source material into something that is directly related to the original works. ![]() ![]() ![]()
